Students who wish to pass this course must purchase Inventors of Ideas: An Introduction to Western Political Philosophy (2nd Edition: Thomson / Wadsworth ISBN 0-534-61263-6). This text was chosen after careful consideration of many others by the instructor. It provides a nice overview of selected political philosophers and - as much as is possible - simplifies critical concepts and ideas in an orderly fashion. Class notes will generally address most of the material covered in the chapters of the text and provide additional analysis and commentary. Thus, the text will often provide a nice means by which to check the quality of class notes.
