GENERAL COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Students in this course will have the opportunity to earn the American
Red Cross Certification for First Aid and CPR for adult, child, and infant.
This course will enable students to:
1. Execute appropriate CPR procedures for adult, child, and infant.
2. Execute appropriate procedures for obstructive airway.
3. Understand the basic concepts of check, call, care.
4. Understand and execute basic first aid procedures.
5. Understand the role of the first responder.
6. Understand and execute basic immobilization procedures.
EVALUATION:
Final grade will be based on a point system. Letter grade will be determined
on a percentage basis of the total number of points.
A 100-90% 430-387 points
B 89-80% 386-344 points
C 79-70% 343-301 points
D 69-60% 300-258 points
F < 60% < 258 points
Attendance: Total 135 points, 31% of overall grade.
· Students are expected to attend class. 3 points are earned
for each class attended and participation.
· No distinction is made between excused and unexcused absences.
· Students arriving after attendance a has been taken will be
marked late. This also applies to leaving early, unless there is an emergency.
o Two lates = One absence
Tests: There will be two exams worth 75 points each, totaling 150 points
or 35%
Overall grade.
ARC completion certificates require course participant to:
· Correctly answer at least 80% of the questions on the written
test.
Tests will cover class lectures, textbook assignments and material presented
on videos.
· Unless excused prior to class time, there will be no make-up
exams.
· All excused make-ups must be taken within three school days
of the scheduled test dates, unless otherwise approved by instructor.
Skill Acquisition: 13 skills to be performed at 5 points each = 65 total
points,
15% of overall grade.
ARC completion certificate requires course participant to:
· Demonstrate competency (correctly and without coaching) in
each critical skill taught in CPR for adult, child, and infant and first
aid skills
· Competencies will checked routinely during practice sessions.
Homework Assignments: Total 80 points, 19% of overall grade
· Various assignments will be given during the course of the
semester and may include such things as completing a crossword puzzle or
short summary papers.
· All assignments are due on the date assigned to it. Late work
will have points deducted from it each day the assignment is late.
· No homework will be accepted after five days late.

SUGGESTIONS:
1. Attend every class and take good notes. Remember, you are responsible
for information given in class, on video’s and in text.
2. Should you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out what
was covered in class (notes or handouts).
3. Ask questions during lectures. Don’t be afraid to contribute information
or ask for clarification of material covered. Remember, we are all here
to learn.
4. If you decide to drop the course, do so through the Registrars Office.
Otherwise, you will receive a failing grade for the semester.
The instructor reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus or
the class as deemed necessary.
