Jim Harcharik is an Associate Professor in the Composition and Literature Division at Rock Valley College. He is a former Chairman of the Communications Division and a veteran of 31years of teaching experiences at the community college level.

Jim came to Rock Valley College after teaching for 17 years at Kishwaukee College in Malta, Illinois. As a professor at Rock Valley for the past 14 years, he has taught a variety of courses including literature, composition, and developmental writing.

Presently, Professor Harcharik concentrates on teaching writing courses at the College utilizing computer-aided instruction. He has made numerous presentations throughout the country on the effective use of computers to improve teaching and learning at the League for Innovation’s Annual Conferences on Information Technology. He is currently working with his colleagues at Rock Valley developing EdNet, an online conferencing and course delivery system used to enhance traditionally-delivered courses. He also offers a number of Distance Learning courses over the Internet.

Having been awarded several grants for multimedia development and training, Jim has authored several multimedia programs. Jim was awarded a sabbatical leave for Spring Semester 1998 during which time he further developed his multimedia authoring skills by building interactive multimedia tutorials for RVC students.

Professor Harcharik has been married to his wife, Anne, for 29 years.    She is a biology teacher at Belvidere Junior High School.

When he is away from campus, Jim is likely to be spotted playing a round of golf at Mauh-Nah-Tee-See Country Club. An avid golfer, Jim also travels the world playing the newly designed golf courses of such golf course architects as Pete Dye and Robert Trent Jones. One highlight of such travels was to meet Pete Dye at his newly designed course at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic.

Other activities for Jim include traveling, downhill skiing, jogging, landscaping, and, of course, keeping up with computer technology which Jim does through work in his company, Digital Pipeline, a developer of web sites, E-commerce strategies, and interactive multimedia CD’s.
